Weather in Mauritius: Which month is the best time to go on holiday?

The weather in Mauritius is ideal for all types of holidays almost all year round. Some months are warmer, others are cooler and wetter, but that doesn’t mean it rains all day even during these cool, rainy winter months.

Mauritius is located between the Equator and the Tropic of Capricorn, which means it has a tropical climate. Its the weather in Mauritius is subtropical. The island enjoys a mild tropical maritime climate all year round, with hot, humid summers from November to April and relatively cold, dry winters from June to September.

The months of May and October are usually called transitional months. The temperature difference between the two seasons (winter and summer) is relatively small and varies from place to place, with temperatures generally higher in coastal areas than in the central plateau. From May to October (winter), stronger easterly and south-easterly winds can also affect your holiday. February is the wettest month, October is the driest.

The Republic of Mauritius is located in the SWIO (South-West Indian Ocean) cyclone belt. The cyclone season runs from November to mid-May. The most cyclones usually strike the island in February, due to high ocean temperatures.

Rainfall:
Because of its tropical climate, many people have the misconception that, just like in some Asian countries, the monsoon comes here and it rains non-stop for days, even weeks. However, based on our experiences so far and our constant contact with the locals, rain mostly occurs at night, when the air cools down a bit and condenses, and then the weather gradually warms up during the day and the sun shines. This may change in the months of June, July and August, which are a few degrees cooler, but even then only occasionally.

When is the best time to go on holiday in Mauritius?

You can actually come all year round, but if you want to be much more certain, then from the beginning of October to May you will definitely have good warm, summer weather with a pleasantly warm ocean. The eastern side of the island has already caused a lot of discussion in the Mauritian Facebook groups, but I still maintain what I wrote in our article “Where should I book accommodation in Mauritius?” that the eastern and southern sides of the island are wonderful, but this is the place where it is really only worth staying from November to the end of March, during the hottest months of the island, when there are no strong winds yet. However, the northern and western coasts of Mauritius welcome visitors all year round, even in the cooler months starting from June, when you can also go to the beach, but it is more pleasant weather for hiking, for example climbing the famous Le Morne.

Which month is least recommended for a holiday in Mauritius?

According to the statistics of the local meteorological station, February is the month with the most cyclones, so even though it is one of the warmest months, it can be a bit dangerous for a holiday. I would choose this month the least, although it is the middle of the holiday season here, a lot of people arrive during this period and they will still have a wonderful holiday, but cyclones can be the most frequent or even the strongest in this month.
