Rochester Falls – A Hidden Gem Amidst Sugarcane Fields

Nestled in the heart of Mauritius’ southern Savanne district, Rochester Falls is a captivating natural wonder that offers both serene beauty and thrilling adventure. Located approximately 2.5 kilometers from the village of Souillac, this 10-meter-high waterfall is renowned for its unique rectangular basalt columns, sculpted over millennia by the persistent flow of the Savanne River.

Reaching Rochester Falls is an adventure in itself. The journey involves navigating through narrow, rugged tracks that wind through expansive sugarcane fields. While the path can be challenging—especially after rain, when it becomes muddy and slippery—the reward is a tranquil oasis far removed from the typical tourist trail.

What sets Rochester Falls apart is its distinctive geological formation. The waterfall cascades over jagged, rectangular basalt rocks, creating a mesmerizing visual spectacle. The pool at the base is crystal clear, inviting visitors to take a refreshing dip. Surrounded by lush greenery, the area is perfect for picnics, photography, or simply soaking in the natural beauty.

During my visit to Rochester Falls, the experience was nothing short of magical. The sound of water crashing onto the rocks, the vibrant green surroundings, and the sense of seclusion made it a memorable escape. Local youths added to the spectacle by performing daring jumps—not just from the top of the falls but also from an overhanging tree. Their fearless dives into the deep pool below were both thrilling and awe-inspiring.

Accompanying me was my 8-year-old son, Abel, whose eyes lit up at the sight of the waterfall. He had always dreamed of jumping from a waterfall, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity. While the towering heights were too daunting, we found a safe spot about two meters high. With a mix of excitement and nervousness, Abel took the leap. His triumphant splash and the grin that followed are moments I’ll cherish forever.
