If you haven’t decided yet whether to book your Mauritius holiday through a travel agent or independently, now is the time. But which is the better choice? Well, that’s subjective.
Through travel agencies, you can arrange everything at once, flight tickets, hotel reservations, airport transfers. It’s simple and great, you can tailor the choice to your needs and you will most likely be in an oceanfront hotel, but of course this has a higher price. If you decide to organize it yourself, you can spend your Mauritius vacation much more cost-effectively, but in return you will have a lot more work to do.
When planning a trip, one of the most important questions is when is the best time to go on holiday in Mauritius? Of course, everyone wants to get the most out of the money they have in the time frame. Typically, the location and the weather are usually in the first place in this area. You can read more about these in the following articles:

What to do if you have already booked your Mauritius holiday:
It’s completely simple, but since we receive many questions about this in our Facebook group and privately, we will describe point by point what you need to know.
- Vaccination
There are no mandatory vaccinations, you do not need to present any vaccinations against malaria, yellow fever or dysentery. Although Mauritius is an African country, these diseases are not present here. Dengue fever can occur annually during the rainy season, but since it is quite rare, the risk can be minimized by protecting yourself from mosquitoes. There are no mosquitoes in beach accommodations. If you go on a trip, always carry mosquito repellent with you.
- Diarrhea medications
This may be needed by those with sensitive stomachs, but the best solution is to simply avoid tap water and ice in food stalls. Ice from the store is not a problem.
- Check your passport
You will need a passport valid for more than 6 months for Mauritius.
- All-in-One travel form
It is worth filling this out online before your arrival, it can speed up the entry process. You can find the All-in-One travel form Click here!
- Visa
You do not need to apply for a visa in advance, you will receive it upon entry. To do this, you will need proof of accommodation for the duration of your stay in Mauritius and your return (or onward) flight ticket.
- What currency do you need?
The Mauritian Rupee (currency symbol MUR, abbreviated as Rs) is used as currency and you cannot exchange it. What you can do:
1. Bring Euros or Dollars and exchange them at a currency exchange office. I recommend Euros, as they are also accepted in some places.
2. Use a bank card. Mastercard and Visa are the most widely accepted cards, followed by American Express. Revolut and Wise both work great in Mauritius and ATM withdrawals are the best option, with Revolut and Wise being the best. If you are worried about your money, you only need to load the Revo or Wise card with the amount you want to use during your holiday in Mauritius. If you don’t have a Wise yet, you can register here: Wise account opening and bank card application.
- Driving in Mauritius
The local peoples are very attentive to tourists on their holiday in Mauritius, extremely patient and helpful. Only driving in reverse can cause a little trouble, but rent an automatic car, so you don’t have to learn to shift gears with your left hand, you have time to focus only on driving.
- SIM card
You can buy a card at the airport, although everyone arrives very tired after a long flight, I recommend doing this after landing. Later it is much more difficult to find a shop where you can buy a SIM card. If you want to do this in the easiest way, then buy an eSIM. You can do this online, you don’t need to queue.
- What you should definitely bring with you on holiday, or buy immediately after your arrival, is sunscreen and a sun hat. The Mauritian sun is different from the rest, here you can not only blush in the shade, you can also quickly get sunburned if the sky is cloudy.
- Arrange a transfer
It is not worth taking a taxi at the airport, it will cost you much more to get to your accommodation. Pre-booked taxis will cost between 1800-2500 rupees, depending on how far away your hotel or apartment is. You can book your airport taxi by clicking here!
