The primary goal of the Premium Visa is to encourage foreign citizens to take a longer trip, whether they are visiting Mauritius as a tourist, a retiree, or for professional purposes. In professional they mainly think of digital nomads, who are not tied to a place, as they can work from anywhere in the world and even bring their family members with them.
The Premium Visa gives the opportunity for non-citizens to stay in the country for longer than 6 months, but up to 1 year, with an option to extend.
Update (October 2024):
Premium visa application requirements: Proof of income of $1,500 per month/adult or equivalent in other currencies for six months + proof of an additional $500 per month for each dependent (child) with a bank statement. That is, for a couple, even if one of them does not work, $3,000/month, for a family with one child, $3,500/month, for a family with 2 children, $4,000/month and so on. If the monthly income is fluctuating, then a year’s reserve, i.e. $18,000/applicant + $18,000 for the spouse or common-law partner living with him/her + dependents, i.e. $6,000/dependent.
Who is eligible?
All non-citizens from the countries listed at the bottom of the article are eligible to apply for a Premium Visa.
Note: foreign nationals whose country is not on this list can still enter Mauritius, but with a Tourist Visa. In addition, they can submit their online application for the Premium Visa during their stay in Mauritius.
How long is it valid for?
The Premium Visa is valid for a period of more than 6 months but not more than 1 year and is renewable.
The Premium Visa is required for those who intend to stay in Mauritius for more than 180 days in a calendar year. Those who intend to stay for less than 180 days will be issued a Tourist Visa upon arrival in Mauritius.
How do I apply for a Premium Visa?
To apply for a Premium Visa, the applicant must demonstrate long-term plans for residence and have adequate travel and medical insurance for the initial period of stay. In addition, the following criteria must be met:
- 1. the applicant must not be employed in the Mauritian labour market
- 2. the principal place of business and/or source of income and profit must be outside Mauritius
- 3. the applicant must have supporting documents such as the purpose of the visit, accommodation, etc.

Once we have completed the application, there is nothing left for us to do but check our emails. The E-visa will arrive to us electronically. The waiting period for the visa is usually 3 months. If you are already on the island with a Tourist Visa and it expires in the meantime, but you have already submitted your application for a Premium Visa, you will be granted an extension of your stay.

The issuance of the Premium Visa is completely free of charge, there is no processing fee.
Tourist Visa for a holiday not exceeding 180 days
A Tourist Visa entitles you to a short-term trip for tourist purposes. Foreign nationals are granted a Tourist Visa for a cumulative stay of up to 180 days in a calendar year.

Can I apply for a work permit or residence permit if I want to work or live in Mauritius for a longer period?
The foreign national A citizen who is residing in Mauritius on a Premium Visa can apply for a work permit if he/she wishes to work or invest in Mauritius. A pensioner who is not a citizen of Mauritius can apply for a residence permit.
Can I acquire residential property in Mauritius while holding a Premium Visa?
A foreign citizen can purchase residential properties developed under the Integrated Resort Scheme (IRS), the Real Estate Scheme (RES), the Property Development Scheme (PDS) or the Smart City Scheme (SCS). In addition, a foreign citizen can also purchase a flat located in a building with at least one ground floor plus two floors.
Taxation
A person holding a Premium Visa is taxed on income earned from remote work in Mauritius on a remittance basis. The amount of money spent in Mauritius using a foreign credit or debit card is not considered to have been transferred to Mauritius.
The holder of the Premium Visa is required to pay income tax on the money held in a bank account in Mauritius. Another convenience is that such bank deposits will not be subject to income tax if a declaration is made that the required tax has already been paid in the country of origin or residence.
