When people think of Mauritius, they often imagine luxurious beaches, crystal-clear lagoons, and five-star resorts. But the island has another face too—one that’s raw, wild, and rarely seen by tourists. One such hidden treasure is Balfour Garden, a place that most Mauritians haven’t even heard of. Tucked away and protected from mass tourism, Balfour Garden is a nature lover’s dream—and a reminder that Mauritius still has secrets waiting to be discovered.
A Hidden Gem Off the Tourist Map
Balfour Garden is not on the usual tourist route. In fact, local tour guides rarely mention it, and public access is limited by a barbed wire fence and a locked gate. On the rare occasion that the gate is open, or with special permission, visitors can descend into this stunning, secluded valley. And it’s absolutely worth the effort.
Our group was fortunate enough to be granted access, and what awaited us was nothing short of breathtaking. The descent is not for the faint-hearted: it involves navigating a steep, slippery hiking trail, almost vertical in places, with minimal handholds. This is not your average garden walk. But if you’re physically able and up for a little adventure, the reward is immense.
The Journey Through the Jungle
Once past the cliff, the trail leads you through thick, untamed jungle. The path follows a winding river, and at times we found ourselves walking right in it. The sound of rushing water, the call of tropical birds, and the rustling of leaves created an atmosphere that was both thrilling and meditative. The jungle occasionally seemed determined to stop us—thick undergrowth and vines blocked the way—but every step only deepened the sense of awe.
After about half an hour, we reached the highlight of Balfour Garden: a serene lake enclosed by a semi-circular wall of ancient rocks. Water trickled and cascaded down the stone from all directions. It felt like walking into a hidden world—a secret amphitheatre of nature.
The Power and Peace of Nature
Standing at the edge of the lake, you feel an overwhelming sense of power—like staring into the eye of something ancient and strong. During our visit, following days of rain, the entire rock wall was glistening white with flowing water. The river was higher and wilder than usual, adding to the dramatic scene. It was cold, remote, and yet intensely peaceful.
The climb back up was just as challenging. The same dust and lack of handholds made the ascent slow and careful. But every member of our group made it, and we were left with an experience we’ll never forget.
Why not take a waterfall hike?
Balfour Garden is a true off-the-beaten-path experience. It’s wild, raw, and not built for mass tourism – which is exactly why it’s too difficult for a vacation.
And while Balfour Garden is an unforgettable experience, there’s another natural wonder nearby that’s more accessible but equally spectacular: 7 Cascades, also known as Tamarind Falls. This breathtaking series of waterfalls offers incredible hiking and swimming opportunities. Unlike Balfour Garden, Tamarind Falls is featured on many hiking tours, and it’s definitely worth booking a guided excursion—especially if you want to swim under waterfalls in the heart of the forest.
